Mass. Wing Cadets Travel to NYC’s Intrepid Museum

January 6, 2025

Massachusetts Wing (MAWG) cadets and adult members journeyed to New York City to visit the Intrepid Museum in late December 2024 to experience aviation history first-hand. The museum boasts a space shuttle, submarine, and dozens of military aircraft. Activities like the museum trip are intended to offer cadets an out-of-the-classroom STEM learning experience.

“There is so much history aboard this floating museum,” said adult member Lt. Col. LouAnn Maffei-Iwuc. “Thanks to the MAWG Cadet Advisory Council and MAWG Cadet Programs for making this trip a reality.”

It wasn’t all educational, however. Cadets also had time to explore Times Square and Rockefeller Center.

The U.S.S. Intrepid is a WWII aircraft carrier commissioned in August 1943. It also served during the Cold War and in Vietnam before the U.S. Navy transferred it to the non-profit museum in 1981. Now, it remains docked in New York City as an air, space, and technology museum with one million visitors annually.

Overall, 33 cadets and 10 senior members from across the Wing participated in the Intrepid Museum visit.
